LAHORE: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Lahore Circle has arrested 39 suspects during a major operation against an alleged illegal call center accused of using fake loan applications, phishing techniques and artificial intelligence for cyber extortion.
39 Suspects Arrested in Call Center Raid
According to an official press release, the operation was conducted on the special directions of NCCIA Director General Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi. Acting on intelligence and technical tracing, an NCCIA team raided a call center operating under the name Talk Master Private Limited in a private housing society in Lahore.
The agency said 39 suspects, including 38 men and one woman, were taken into custody during the operation.
Officials recovered 40 laptops, 41 mobile phones, desktop computers, internet devices and other digital equipment from the premises.
According to the NCCIA, the suspects allegedly used several fake loan applications, including Aghar, Grow Fund, Gems Fund, Cash Air, Credi Check and Credit Support, to persuade citizens to install applications by offering loans.
Investigators allege that malware links and phishing techniques were subsequently used to gain unauthorized access to victims’ mobile phone galleries and contact lists.
AI-Generated Images Allegedly Used for Extortion
The NCCIA further alleged that personal photographs obtained from victims were manipulated through artificial intelligence technology to create fabricated compromising images, which were then allegedly used to demand money from victims. Those refusing to pay were allegedly threatened that the manipulated material would be sent to relatives and friends.
Officials said preliminary examination of the recovered devices revealed AI software, allegedly fabricated images and material linked to the suspected extortion activity. The devices have been sealed in accordance with forensic and legal procedures for detailed examination.
According to the agency, initial investigations indicate that the group had allegedly been involved in organized cyber extortion for an extended period.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act and the Pakistan Penal Code, while further investigation is underway. Investigators will also seek to identify the alleged owners of the call center and any facilitators based overseas.
DG NCCIA Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi said misuse of artificial intelligence to target innocent citizens, particularly women, would not be tolerated. He said protecting citizens’ digital rights and Pakistan’s digital and financial reputation remains a priority for the agency.
The allegations remain subject to investigation and determination by the relevant courts.
