LAHORE: Dr. Babar Bhatti has assumed the role of President of the Young Doctors Association (YDA) at Services Hospital Lahore (SHL), marking a new chapter in his years-long association with the organisation and its efforts to represent young medical professionals.
A graduate of the Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Lahore, Dr. Bhatti has been actively associated with YDA since his student days, gradually progressing through various organisational responsibilities before reaching its top leadership position at Services Hospital.
Early Involvement in Young Doctors’ Movement
Dr. Bhatti began his journey with the Young Doctors Association during his medical education at SIMS, where he developed an interest in organisational activities and the representation of medical students and young doctors.
During his house job, he served as YDA House Officers Coordinator, playing an active role in coordinating organisational activities and addressing issues concerning junior doctors.
He continued his association with YDA while working as a Senior House Officer at Children’s Hospital Lahore, maintaining his involvement in the organisation alongside his professional responsibilities.
Role in Medical Graduates’ Rights Movement
Dr. Bhatti was also actively involved in protests against proposals to introduce an examination similar to the National Licensing Examination (NLE) for locally trained medical graduates.
During the movement, he worked alongside other YDA representatives and participated in demonstrations opposing the proposed examination requirements.
His involvement in the campaign became an important part of his organisational experience, strengthening his association with the young doctors’ community and its demands for professional rights.
Return to Services Hospital and Leadership Roles
After passing his professional examination on the first attempt, Dr. Bhatti returned to Services Hospital Lahore to begin his postgraduate training.
He resumed his involvement in YDA activities, initially serving as ENT Ward Coordinator before taking responsibility as Dr. Faisal Masood Tower Coordinator.
He also served in a leadership capacity representing SIMS students, further expanding his experience in organisational management and coordination.
His progression within YDA continued with his appointment as Deputy General Secretary, followed by his elevation to General Secretary.
During a particularly challenging period when the association was functioning without a president, Dr. Bhatti reportedly managed responsibilities as General Secretary for more than six months.
He subsequently served a full year as General Secretary of YDA Services Hospital Lahore under the presidency of Dr. Zeeshan Lashari.
New Responsibility as YDA President
Following years of involvement at student, ward and hospital levels, Dr. Bhatti has now taken charge as President of YDA Services Hospital Lahore.
His appointment represents a progression from grassroots organisational activities to the leadership of one of Lahore’s prominent hospital-based young doctors’ associations.
His professional and organisational background includes experience in medical training, student representation, coordination among young doctors and participation in campaigns concerning the rights of medical graduates.
As president, Dr. Bhatti is expected to play a central role in representing young doctors at Services Hospital Lahore, addressing their professional concerns and strengthening coordination within the association.
His elevation also highlights the continuing role of medical professionals who began their involvement in student organisations before assuming senior responsibilities in the Young Doctors Association.
