LAHORE: Salma Butt’s appointment as a Punjab provincial minister follows a public-facing role in price control, food safety and consumer protection, with her recent work spanning district inspections, enforcement reviews and changes to market-monitoring systems.
Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan appointed her under Article 132(1) of the Constitution through an order dated October 21, 2026. She previously served as special assistant to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Who is Salma Butt?
Butt is a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz legislator representing women’s reserved seat W-307 in the current Punjab Assembly. Her official assembly listing records her role as special assistant for Food Safety and Consumer Protection. Her responsibilities have also included price control and commodities management.
Her Work Before Joining the Cabinet
One significant administrative decision came in January 2026, when the Punjab Price Control Council, at a meeting chaired by Butt, approved the delegation of regulatory powers covering 49 essential commodities to relevant departments. The framework assigned responsibility for different goods to specialist authorities, with the stated aim of improving coordination and maintaining supplies.
Her work also included efforts to improve accountability within the inspection system. At an August 2026 council meeting, Butt reported that changes to the Qeemat App required magistrates to upload their live location and a selfie during inspections, helping prevent false inspection entries. The meeting reviewed the performance of 1,635 price control magistrates across Punjab.
Food quality and coordinated enforcement featured in her district-level work. During a September meeting in Multan, she directed authorities to strengthen checks on milk and meat, train enforcement teams, collect cold-storage data and conduct joint operations against adulteration and overcharging. These were documented directions; the report did not independently measure their subsequent impact.
She also publicly outlined plans for consumer e-courts and a complaint application in December 2025. At that stage, she described preparations as being in their final stages, rather than confirming that the services were operational.
Why Was She Chosen?
Her established responsibilities and involvement in these reforms provide a credible performance-related context for her elevation. That is an assessment of her documented record, rather than a confirmed explanation from the government. The appointment order establishes her ministerial appointment but gives no performance assessment or selection rationale.
Users on Social media are praising her work against food adulteration and for consumer protection, presenting her appointment as a merit-based addition to the cabinet. His remarks should be attributed as commentary.
