LHC Orders End to Patient Slip System in Punjab Government Hospitals

The court directs authorities to eliminate registration queues, ensure immediate medical attention and introduce a technology-based system across public hospitals.

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the Punjab government to abolish the existing patient registration slip system in public hospitals within four weeks, aiming to reduce delays and make medical treatment more accessible.

Justice Malik Javed Iqbal Wain issued the written order while hearing a petition filed by the Judicial Activism Panel concerning the lack of medical facilities in government hospitals.

The court directed authorities to ensure that patients visiting emergency departments and outpatient departments (OPDs) receive immediate medical attention without being required to obtain registration slips or wait in lengthy queues before treatment.

It observed that patients should not face unnecessary procedural hurdles when seeking medical care.

Modern Technology-Based System Ordered

During the proceedings, Special Secretary Health Nabeela Irfan assured the court that the existing slip system would be abolished within four weeks and replaced with a modern, technology-based patient management system across government hospitals in Punjab.

She said the proposed system would make the medical examination and treatment process more efficient and convenient for patients.

Compliance Report Sought from Authorities

The high court also sought a comprehensive report on the provision of medical facilities in government hospitals across the province.

The written order noted that the petition had been pending since 2020 and that, despite several judicial directions, none of the parties had submitted a compliance report.

The court observed that repeated failure to implement its orders reflected a lack of seriousness and negligence on the part of the concerned authorities.

All relevant officials have been directed to ensure compliance within four weeks and submit documentary evidence confirming the abolition of the slip system and implementation of the new arrangement.

The court warned that officials responsible could face action if its directions were again ignored without justification.

The Lahore High Court adjourned further proceedings for six weeks.
