Lahore Gears Up for Basant 2027

Preparations continue for the March 12–14 festival, with rooftop safety, registered sellers, and restrictions on dangerous string central to arrangements.

LAHORE: Preparations for Basant 2027 are underway in Lahore, with authorities setting out safety requirements and arrangements for the three-day festival on March 12, 13, and 14. The district administration has confirmed the dates and directed participants to follow approved kite-flying rules.

Rooftop Safety Requirements

Rooftop safety is a key part of the preparations. Buildings used for kite flying must have strong protective boundary walls at least three-and-a-half feet high, while repairs to roofs, parapets, and stairs must be completed by December 31, 2026.

Administration has also ordered inspections of older buildings and residential rooftops. Kite flying will not be permitted on structures found unsafe, with property owners responsible for ensuring rooftop safety.

Registration and Sale of Kite-Flying Materials

Digital registration is mandatory for kite and string manufacturers, traders, and shopkeepers. Under the announced schedule, purchase, transportation, and storage of kite-flying materials will be permitted from February 1, 2027, followed by public sales through registered sellers from February 10 to March 14.

Prohibited Materials and Safety Measures

Chemical, metallic, and sharp-coated string, along with aerial firing and fireworks, remain prohibited. Only approved kites and cotton strings in the prescribed form will be allowed during the festival.

The district administration, police and relevant departments have been tasked with enforcing the safety conditions. Kite flying will be allowed only during the three approved days and outside designated prohibited areas.
