LAHORE, October 8, 2026: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has declared a 30-day detention order issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore against Punjab University law student Ali Asghar invalid and directed the authorities to release him immediately.
LHC Annuls 30-Day Detention Order
Justice Abher Gul Khan issued the order while hearing a petition challenging the student’s detention.
During the proceedings, Advocate Irfan Faiz Kalar appeared on behalf of the petitioner and presented arguments against the detention order issued by the district administration.
According to the petition, Ali Asghar is a fourth-year law student at the University of the Punjab and is scheduled to appear in his examinations beginning October 9.
The petitioner’s counsel informed the court that police personnel had taken the student into custody on October 4 from his residence in Rasool Park, Shahdara Town, Lahore.
Following his detention, the authorities issued an order directing that he remain in custody for 30 days, the petition stated.
The petitioner challenged the legality of the deputy commissioner’s decision and requested the Lahore High Court to set aside the detention order.
Court Directs Student’s Immediate Release
After hearing the arguments, Justice Abher Gul Khan annulled the deputy commissioner’s order and directed the student’s immediate release.
The ruling came one day before the scheduled commencement of Ali Asghar’s university examinations.
The court’s directive requires the relevant authorities to comply with the release order. Confirmation of the student’s actual release was not immediately available.
