LAHORE: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province with immediate effect, introducing restrictions on public gatherings as part of security measures that will remain in force until October 5.
Restrictions on Public Gatherings
According to the Punjab Home Department notification, gatherings of five or more people at public places, roads, highways and open spaces have been prohibited. Rallies, processions, sit-ins and demonstrations fall within the restrictions. Carrying or displaying weapons at public places and encouraging participation in gatherings prohibited under the order have also been barred.

The Home Department said the restrictions were imposed after reports from law-enforcement and intelligence agencies concerning threats to public order and the safety of citizens and property.
Exemptions Under Section 144
Weddings, funeral prayers, burials, mosques and other places of worship are exempt. Courts, government institutions, officially permitted events and law-enforcement, intelligence and security personnel performing official duties are also exempt from the restrictions.
Request for Mobile and Internet Restrictions
Separately, a Punjab Home Department letter dated September 21, a copy of which was provided to Lahore Tribune, seeks federal action for downgrading or jamming mobile and internet services in the Rawalpindi region from September 27.
The letter requests 2G, 3G and 4G network jamming at specified locations in Rawalpindi, including areas/routes identified as Barahma Bahtar to M-1, Gango, Ahata, Taxila City, Wah Saddar, Thallian and Chakri, from 9am on September 27. It also seeks the downgrading of mobile and internet services throughout Attock district from September 27 onward.
Proposed Network Restrictions Not Confirmed
The document constitutes a request to the federal authorities, rather than confirmation that the proposed network restrictions have been approved or implemented. Reporting on Wednesday similarly indicated that the proposed restrictions had not yet been confirmed as approved.
Security Preparations Ahead of PTI March
The measures come amid heightened security preparations ahead of PTI’s announced September 27 Islamabad march. The Punjab government has also sought Rangers deployment in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali to assist police with law and order arrangements.
